Marc's Gf Katrina custom ordered this for his birthday. The only stipulation was... "make him checking the waves". So I took the idea and ran with it. This one is titled "Surf check at the end of the trail". Found objects mounted on Jersey swamp cedar with pine dune fence. The board has a hd foam stringer and fin.

Here 's a new custom hand plane, or I might call this model a Hand Sled, for a birthday present. Made from royal paulownia with mahogany stringers and white cedar and mahogany nose & tail blocks. I did a little experiment with texturing the deck on this one too. As always there is a nice concave on the bottom for lift.

I always start projects and never seem to reconnect with them till months later. I stripped the glass from the nose of HAARRRRYYYY's old Stewart and templated out one of the Tomb Stone templates on it months ago. Then, a few weeks ago I spent a day ripping wood for cutting boards. I ripped a piece of white cedar I found in the rafters for outside stringers on the paipo randomly during that session. I cut the blank and finally started gluing in the stringers tonight. This is what she looks like so far.

These Recycler projects are fun little projects. I think I'm going to make recycled wood flooring d-fins on this. It should be interesting to see how this one turn out.

Kara's hubby's cutting board

Some of the rips for cutting boards went into the glue up for my college friend Kara as I said before. I shot a pre-glue-up photo, but forgot to take a post return from the mill shot. Oh well. The guys @ South Jersey Lumbermans hooked it up. It was run through their giant belt sander and flattened out perfectly. Some finish sanding and routing and it came out perfect! This cutting board measures approximately 24" x 18 1/2" x 2". Wow it's a beast, super cool though. The coolest one yet! So far it has 1 coat of butcher block oil on it. I'm adding a few more and then shipping it off to Lancaster.

Kara, an old friend from my art school daze, contacted me on Facebook about a cutting board for her husband. I of course said yes. This one is going to be a beast... 2' long by about 18" wide and 2" thick. WOW! I'm going to have to take the glue-up to the mill to plane it down, b/c my planer can only handle 12 1/2" boards. Here are the boards being milled from a few pieces of maple hardwood flooring scraps my buddy Jimmy gave me. Plus there will be pieces of purple heart, yellow heart, black walnut, and mahogany being put into the random glue-up blank.

Joe contacted me a while back to help get his work out to more people. As an artist and a lover of art I of course said yes. His work is awesome, and pictures defiantly don't do it justice. I saw it during sun set @ Steve & Cookies Oyster Bar in Margate, NJ a few weeks ago. It is stunning. Finished in April after 7 months/500 hrs, he was trying to show one of the gigantic 50 ft. monsters that roll in over the north shore of Oahu in the winter. It measures 6' x 3', and has approx. 1500 pieces of German, French, and American style glass, plus several shades opf glue chip glass.

Here's is Joe's bio...

I started out in the styained glass trade back in 1979. I was walking down Main ST. in New hope, Pa, when I came upon a stained glass shop. I walked insideand was looking out from the inside-this dude had an entire forest scene down 20 ft. on one wall and 30 ft. down the other one. He probably had 50,00 pieces of glass in this project. My jaw dropped, the guy came out of the back of the shop and asked me if he could help me, I said"how do you do this"? He laughed ,told me to come into his workshop and he'd show me. He showed me how to use the cutters, grozing pliers,etc. He said the best tyhing I could do was go to a hardware store at home and get some cheap window panel type glass, the 2 sets of pliers, and go home and practice cutting the glass. He sais I'd know very soon if this or not. If not-then I wouldn't have spent much cash. I did all this and within 10 min I knew I was HOOKED!!!!!. I strated making small suncatchers that you hang in front of the window on a string. Then I made afew larger things mirrors, jewel boxes, etc. By one yrs time, I was making full siuze panels for the neighbors. As time passed, I found I was getting all the work I could do by word of mouth referrals alone. I have many references that can be called,who can attest to my work. Thanks again- JOE

Here is a sculpture I made for the South Jersey Surfrider Foundation art benefit last winter. My friend Steve Mullen sent this over to me a bit ago. I forgot about it, but now it's found. Dig the fancy red wetty! ;-) The board is made from paulownia and red cedar.

These 2 dashboard riders will be on proud display in 2 different San O surf vans. These triple stringer boards are glued up from maple and mahogany, both with red cedar log cutoff bases (I found on the beach in my secret spot).

They are finally here...

I designed these shorts as a part of the Quicksilver Collaborative. 6 surf shops were chosen to design their own shorts. Heritage Surf Shop was one of these, and I was asked to design a one of a kind "Fin Revolution" painting to use as the print on them. Quicksilver made up a pair of their bitchin Diamond Doby board shorts with the image. I'm super stoked on the way they turned out.

A new sculpture for my non existent blog posts... Perfect Trim is a small sculpture on a hunk of royal paulownia. The board is made of bass wood with a mahogany and maple t-band and a paduk fin. finishing off the sculpture is a patina copper wave lined with small pieces of driftwood. Here are 2 boards I finished for my friend Lance for wall art. The first is made from brazilian cherry, red oak, purple heart, and yellow heart with blood wood and maple nose and tail blocks. The fin is made from 12 sheets of fiberglass cloth with a mahogany stringer running through it. The second board is made from 1/4 sawn red oak and black walnut w/ mahogany nose and tail blocks. The fin on this one is made from red oak and mahogany.

I spent most of yesterday working on some projects for clients and my Etsy shop.

The Alaia Raffle board (Being raffled off @ Yesterdays restaurant in Marmora, NJ on 4/9/10) has been cut out. I also cut the bottom concave in yesterday as well as planed out the bottom rails. This board is made from white cedar with a red cedar and paulownia tail block. For raffle tickets contact me @ info@JKSurfArt.com .
Harry's Alaia has been skinned and is ready for the concave to be cut into the bottom.
Finally I made 2 new bodysurfing hand planes, one for a client and one for stock. The first is a slipper model made from paulownia with red cedar and mahogany stringers. The second is a downrail swallow tail model for Paul Aman. I'm coating both of these with a sanding sealer and a waterborne polyurethane. Once that is dry I'll add the straps.

As I've said before, I also fix surfboards. With surfboard technology constantly changing these days you need to step your game up. I got a friends buckled Firewire a few months back and have been researching how to fix it. The big thing was to get the cracked EPS back together. I had to inject 2/1 pour foam into the crack, cut back the extra, and then add an epoxy/ferring filler combo to take care of any extra bubbles. Then I sanded it back and wrapped it. Tomorrow I'll sand the wrap back and give it a final coat of epoxy. Then I'll do a final sand and paint it so you can't even tell.

I've been working on some boards for clients lately. These are all around 3' , hand glued and shaped. The first 2 are for Lance and are going to be wall hangers. #3 is for a large sculpture and is once again inspired by Mike (Gnar Gnar) Black's Pig project. The 4th will be for a large sculpture also which will be placed in a local dentist office. # 2 & 3 will get glass chopstick fins that I am about to mount today. More pics to follow.

I've been working for the last month on building a new counter for Heritage Surf Shop in Ocean City, NJ. The base display cabinets are built out and now I'm working on the counter tops. This top is inspired by the floors I helped Jim Hyde of Old School Hardwood Floors install in Steve and Cookies by the Bay in Margate, NJ. It is reminiscent of an old boat deck. The African Mahogany and Maple set themselves off very cool. Here are shots of the tops before coating them.

Here is the glue up for my OLC buddy Harry's alaia. Harry is the owner/roaster of Harry and Beans Coffee, yep, the guy that keeps me all coffeed up!

I ran into a bit of trouble milling this paulownia. The last time I got some it was very clear w/ minimal knots. This batch, from a different source, was riddled w/ worm holes and knots. Unfortunately I had to mill it into smaller pieces, so this glue-up is made from 5 pieces of royal paulownia. It's going to be around a 6'4 arc tail. I might do some fancy glue-ups in the tail for effect. We'll see.

"The Duke"

This is a large surf sculpture that measures approx. 4' tall. The board is about 3' and made from red oak, mahogany, and yellow heart with a purple heart and maple fin. The base is made from a found cedar log with other various driftwoods attached. The shorts are hand sewn from a pair of the infamous DJ Bobby K's original shorts which ripped @ a surf contest a few years ago.

Mike Black (aka Gnar Gnar) has inspired me to build a special dashboard rider. His site SURF A PIG has gotten me all riled up. Gnar Gnar's stoke on old pig style shapes has given me the inspiration to make a special HAM Model for his car or spaceship or what ever he is crusing around in these days. The board is glued up from santos mahogany, philipino mahogany, red cedar & white pine with a black walnut fin.

Here is another kinetic sculpture I just finished. Light as a feather, stiff as a board is another sculpture inspired from my latest trip to Puerto Rico. The base is a paulownia red cedar, mahogany glue up. The board is made from 7 pieces of red oak and mahogany with a maple fin. There is a patina copper hand hammered wave with driftwood behind it.

This is a sculpture I finished the other day inspired by some of the noserides I got @ Maria's while in PR. The base is a piece of paulownia. The hand hammered copper wave has a patina. The board is made from 7 strips of red oak and mahogany with a maple fin. I placed this one on a spring like the dashboard riders. The combination of the surfer on the spring and the flexible wave give this sculpture great kinetic movement.

This sculpture is made from a cool piece of driftwood I found. I found myself sitting in the studio and dreaming of surfing this wavelike curl. You can't see them in the photos, but I love the stones the wood grew around.

The base is glued up maple and black walnut. The surfboard is red oak and mahogany.

So, I've been so busy building hand planes for everyone else that I haven't built one for myself yet. I glued up some scraps of paulownia I had leftover w/ stringers of red cedar and mahogany. After the outline was cut out and the hand plane was shaped I added channels. I'm going to take this down to PR the next time I go.

Here is #2. This is a cut through handle design. I think I am liking the surface mount handles better, but there is something earthy & "green" about not adding nylon strapping. I cut a nice concave in the bottom of this to try to achieve some lift while bodysurfing.

Here is the first of many hand planes I've been working on. It's made from paulownia scrap that I didn't want to discard from making the alaias. It has a flat top rolled bottom and an adjustable hand strap. I coated it in the same linseed oil and bees wax solution the I've been using on the alaias. This one is going to Richard Tator of the OLC for a Xmas present.

To finish the boards I'm using a linseed oil and bees wax solution that I melt down and mix together. Most guys are using just one coat b/c paulownia is salt water resistant. Buuut, I believe in overkill, so I do 2.

The logos and my signature are burnt into the wood.

For the final sanding of the Alaias I go through a few grits of paper. I start w/ 100 grit to knock down the hard edges on the rails and add the concave in the back. Then I smooth everything out w/ 150 grit, and finally 220.

Planing out the alaia rail bands

I've found that hand planing my rail bands is easier than using the power planer on the paulownia. I use my smaller block plane to run the rails, then I go to my grinder/sander to finish them off.

The 6' Alaia for an Xmas present and the shop Alaia have been templated and cut out. 1st step was to clean up the blanks, so I planed down the high spots w/ an old block plane that I have. Then I put a piece of masonite down that I have cut to the exact size template I want and draw it on the blanks. Then I cut them out w/ a jig saw.

Got the shop alaia and paipo glued up the other day. Went with a stringer effect in both of them to see how it works. The alaia has 2 cedar stringers running through it, and the paipo has a cedar and paulownia t-band.

Working on a few Christmas presents. One for a customer and a few for shop use. The customer project is a 6' paulownia alaia. For shop experimentation we are building a 6' paulownia alaia and a 3' paulownia paipo. I might even add in a few hand planes for good measure.

The wood was milled yesterday and we joined, biscuited, glued and clamped the customer alaia. Glue ups for the shop boards will be done today.

I'll keep you all updated on the outline cutout and shaping.

As I woke up this afternoon from my fever induced coma, I found myself on the Cape May Lewis Ferry on the Delaware side. About a 1/2 drive was ahead of me and the Wu dog. We finally arrived @ Chesapeake Woodworkers Sales in Millboro, De. The guys were more than helpful and showed me around the shop and lumber yard. I found lots of exotic wood species and the wood I came for Royal Paulownia. Thanks to them I'll be able to finish another Alaia project for a client before Xmas.

Ahhhhh, a much needed vacation...

My family and I are home from a much needed vacation in Puerto Rico. It was nice to catch up with some old friends and kick back with a few Presidente's on the hammock. The surf was fun and inspiring. I'm starting a few new paintings and a bunch of block prints of PR. I'll show them as soon as they are done.

Trophies for the City of Rancho Cucamonga, Ca

I was honored to be asked to make trophies for the City of Rancho Cucamonga's Founders day festival this year. The theme this year is California Dreamin' so naturally Surfboard Trophies are best thing to award the winning floats.

Founders day is Saturday Nov 14.

"Kaya" 7'4" swallow tail alaia

"KiKi" 5'1 alaia

I just finished off 2 alaias. The first one is "KiKi" a 5'1" made from laminated yellow pine finished w/ a beeswax / linseed oil mixture.

The second is "Kaya" a 7'4 swallow tail alaia made of paulownia wood with a mahogany noseblock finished with a beeswax / linseed oil mixture. The paulownia wood blank came from John Wegener of Wegener Surfboards in Cali. Paulownia wood is beautiful to work with and it's light as a feather. Both alaias, plus the 7'8" Philippino mahogany one, will be on display @ the Art Of Surfing Festival on the Music Pier in Ocean City, NJ - Aug 6-8th.

New SUP trophy for the Coronado SUP Surf Crew

Here is the Sup trophy for the CSUPSC. It came out awesome. I burned and wire brushed a piece of pine for the base. The Deck is a red oak, brazilian cherry, mahogany, yellow heart glue up w/ a hand hammered copper wave attached. The SUP surfer is on a mahogany board on a spring w/ a red oak and brazilian cherry paddle. Behind the plaque is a black walnut backer.

Andrew asked me to make a sculpture for his sister and her husband. 2 surfers on one wave symbolic of a shared life together...

The base is 2 types of mahogany, red oak, & yellow heart. Board #1 is mahogany & bass, board 2 is pine w/ painted stripes. The wave is hammered copper w/ a patina. In the background is an ugly hawaiian shirt from my collection.

The Alaia project...

I started the "Alaia Project" @ the beginning of January. I went off to the mill inspired by the works of Tom Wegner and some video on YouTube of guys like Christian Wach riding Alaias. I began looking for home grown Jerzy wood. I thought a white cedar would be a good local wood to use keeping the wood locally harvested, glued and shaped.

Well, so much for that at this moment. I ended up with Philippino Mahogany for the first few boards, w/ full intention of bringing it full circle back to a total jersey project.

I glued up 2 blanks so far. 1 for a 7'8 Alaia & 1 for a 4' Paipo (Pipe' o) or bodyboard.

I finished off the Paipo the other day. Here is a bottom shot. Now off to work on the Alaia.
